2019 Featured Product: COYOTE® HD Dome Closure

From the COYOTE HD Dome Closure’s showcase at FBA’s Fiber Connect 2019 to the “Overhead Construction Practices” seminar held at our global headquarters this year, the Communications industry continues to recognize Preformed Line Products (PLP®) as the leading authority on closures.

The COYOTE HD Closure was front and center at the ISE Expo for the second straight year, making it the must-see product for over 100 registered participants in the Demo Zone area. Acknowledging PLP’s product as the preferred choice for high-density applications, the Demo Zone highlighted the key features of the HD Closure: its patented Segmented End Plate, superior interior organization, and overall tray versatility, including easy reentry for laterals and drops.

Global Expansion and Integration

PLP's product line continues to expand, as does its global family. PLP recently acquired MICOS Telcom, a company founded in 1990 that specializes in the development, engineering, manufacturing, and sale of components for both copper and fiber applications.

At the 2019 SCTE-ISBE Cable-Tec Expo, PLP showcased the MICOS product line, which includes internal and external network distribution boxes for FTTP and MDU applications. In addition to network boxes, the MICOS line also features an Optical Pillar Closure series. An alternative to traditional pedestal systems, the Optical Pillar Closure line provides a secure housing for hard splicing, internal connectivity, or a combination of both.

Back to Basics: Understanding Overhead Construction Practices

In November, PLP hosted a live training for the Buckeye Chapter of the SCTE at our global headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. Over 30 managers and technicians from the cable industry attended the training, and hundreds of others participated remotely by attending PLP’s summative webinar, which was held after the event.

Both the in-person training and the online webinar were designed to provide “back to basics” training, focusing on the fundamentals of overhead construction and its associated safe practices.

As the designer and manufacturer of one of the most recognized industry products, the GUY-GRIP® Dead End, PLP was able to provide seminar participants with a unique inside look at the design and testing behind this popular product. Key concepts discussed to help explain the importance of the GUY-GRIP's helical design included:

  • The ID/OD ratio (the relationship between the inner diameter of the dead-end and the outer diameter of the cable)

  • The ideal pitch length

  • Proper grit application

  • The importance of matching the cable's lay direction.

The training seminar also touched on topics such as leg kick, phasing, and the reasoning behind matching materials to provide optimal performance.
